Background +
Meguro Gau’s tale starts six years before the start of the manga when his mother’s brutally killed by a street thug. Gau does not get long to grieve however, because his mother’s killer is released only three years later after a sentence that certainly didn’t fit the crime. Enraged, Gau tries to seek revenge against the one who took his mother only to fail. Epically. In fact, if it wasn’t for the rogue ninja Shimizu Raikou, Gau’d be a whole lot quieter these days. Also, six feet under. After this event, Gau decides to devote his life entirely to serving Raikou and as a result joins the Kairoushuu (Ash wolves) despite not coming from a ninja line and having zero knowledge about the ninja world called Nabari. We presume they let him in because Raikou vouched for him and they really needed someone to clean up the office. Meguro Gau has now been with Kairoushuu three years and his knowledge of ninjas has grown exponentially. His fighting skills have improved to the point where he can stand up to a paper bag. Luckily Gau’s duties to the Kairoushuu are mostly administrative. Together with Raikou, he seeks out ninjas who use their skills to commit crimes; Raikou fights them and Gau documents everything and writes the reports. In point twelve Times New Roman. The centre of Gau’s universe is without a doubt Shimizu Raikou. Gau would do anything to see him smile and be happy, which is why he takes it upon himself to heal the rift between Raikou and his sister Raimei after hearing Raikou’s true motives for the massacre of his clan. He seeks out Raimei and tells her the entire story, despite the fact that Raikou might not want to see him anymore after doing so. In short, Raikou’s happiness > Gau’s ability to see him. He even jumps between the siblings in the resulting fight, taking a blow from Raikou that was meant for Raimei and ends up in a long coma. Although there is the possibility that the kinjutsushou of Koga village could heal Gau from his coma, Raikou refuses the sacrifice the humans necessary to use it, knowing that Gau would feel terrible knowing some one else had to die so he could live. Luckily, help comes in the form of Yoite who uses his kira technique to wake up Gau from his coma. As a result of this, Gau feels deeply indebted to him, going as far as to go against the Kairoushuu’s orders in order to help him. Gau might not have any ninja skills, but he does know the power of administration, cooking, cleaning and bitching loudly at people. He can also read Braille and is good at using a 3-part abacus.

Personality +
Gau is at heart an idealist. He truly believes that the Kairoushuu will bring justice to the world by protecting the innocent people of the surface world from the evil of the world of Nabari. And while his contributions to the overall cause might not be very big, he believes whole-hearted in giving his fullest to his duties to one day obtain that justice. He is also willing to call out a superior if he believes that they (or their poor work ethic) could endanger their goal. Gau has a terrible temper, and Yukimi has even nicknamed him Tenpa-kun after the Japanese word Tenparu (about to blow a fuse) His temper usually comes out when he feels people do not pay the proper amount of respect to Raikou, when talking about things very close to his heart, when teased by Yukimi or when faced with the fact that his fellow members of Kairoushuu (red. Yukimi) are unbelievable slobs. Gau just cannot live in this filth, okay? As mentioned already, the centre of Gau’s world is Raikou. He is insanely loyal to him, willing to bear the greatest pain and even the possibility of never seeing him again if that could ensure his happiness. He is always at Raikou’s side and while he is not a fighter, he has gotten mixed into a few fights to help out Raikou. Raikou is usually the one who deals with Gau’s temper outbursts by punching him on the head, kicking him or taking him in a head lock. Despite the fact that their love is kind of abusive, Gau is still gay as rainbows for Raikou.
